People Who Smokes

Think you know house music? Think again.
On this, his first EP, Italian globetrotter Solo has country hopped to India and Africa, savoured each nation’s indigenous percussion, vocals and infectious ethnic pulses and stripped them down to their beat-driven, groove-laden essence.

Dubbed ‘midget house’ by Solo and his studio cohort and Deadfish/Freshfish label owner Mowgli (tongues firmly in their cheeks, mind), his sound blends unrelenting, gloopy and minimal tech beats with the bass-driven, world-reaching ‘fidget’ house sound that has linked all genres via producers like Switch, Sinden and Diplo.

Says Solo, “‘Afreaka’ is the proper ‘housey’ big room track, while ‘Midgets in Brick Lane’ relates to my experience of one of London’s most multi-sensory, multi-cultural areas, which is where my ‘bat-cave’ studio is. ‘People Who Smokes’ is the intimate stoner track which reflects that winding down mood after an after party – I made it after a long, weed-filled session.”

Claude Von Stroke has already caught on to Solo’s off-kilter production skills and signed him to his label DirtyBird, so expect a release in 2009.
